When to Do Newborn Photos: A Guide for Parents in Doha

If you’re expecting a baby, newborn photos are probably somewhere on your to-do list, between packing the hospital bag and setting up the cot. One of the most common questions I’m asked by parents in Doha is simple: when is the best time to do newborn photos?

Here’s the short answer, and everything else you need to know to plan a calm, relaxed session.

The short answer: the first 5–14 days

The ideal time for newborn photos is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth.

During these first two weeks, most babies:

  • sleep deeply and for longer stretches, which makes gentle posing much easier
  • still naturally curl up in the cosy, womb-like positions that newborn photos are known for
  • are less startled by being moved, wrapped and settled

That doesn’t mean a session after two weeks can’t be beautiful. It’s simply when those classic sleepy, curled-up newborn images come most easily.

When should you book your newborn session?

Babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, so the best approach is to book during your second or early third trimester. That way:

  • your session is reserved around your due date
  • we have time to plan colours, styling and setups together
  • once your baby arrives, you simply send me a message and we confirm the final date

If your baby comes early or late, that’s completely normal. We adjust the date together.

What if my baby has already arrived?

Please still get in touch. I always do my best to fit in last-minute newborn sessions, depending on availability.

Is it too late for newborn photos at 3, 5 or 8 weeks?

No, but the style of the photos will be a little different.

Baby’s ageWhat to expect
5–14 daysSleepy, curled-up poses, wraps and classic newborn setups
2–4 weeksStill lots of sleepy moments; babies may need a little more settling
4 weeks and olderBabies are more alert and awake: lovely for eye contact, expressions and family portraits, with fewer curled poses

Every age has its own beauty. Whether your baby is sleepy or wide awake, I work patiently around their needs and capture the moments as they come.

Planning around your recovery

The first days after birth are about rest and recovery, whether you had a natural birth or a C-section. A newborn session is designed to be gentle on parents too:

  • you can stay comfortable and sit down for parent portraits
  • there’s plenty of time for breaks, feeds and cuddles
  • home service is available for newborn sessions in Doha

If you have any medical concerns about timing, please follow your doctor’s advice first. We can always move the date.

How a newborn session works

A newborn session usually takes 2 to 3 hours. That might sound long, but it allows time for:

  • feeding and soothing whenever your baby needs it
  • slow, gentle posing at your baby’s pace
  • outfit and setup changes
  • parent and sibling photos, if you’d like them

Everything is provided: wraps, outfits, headbands, hats, blankets, baskets and carefully selected props. Colours and setups can be customised to suit your style.

How to prepare

  • Try to keep your baby a little awake before the session and feed them just before it starts. A full, sleepy baby is a happy model.
  • Have extra diapers, milk or formula, wipes and a pacifier (if your baby uses one) close by.
  • Choose any sentimental item you’d like included: a special blanket, a name sign, or something from family.

Safety comes first

As a female photographer with over 5 years of experience, I treat your baby’s comfort and safety as my highest priority. I have completed newborn safety training and hold a certificate in it, so every pose is done gently and safely. I never force a pose. If your baby is unsettled, we simply pause, feed, cuddle and try again.
